Strategic Plan for the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association

The Ontario Beekeepers’ Association (OBA) is one of Canada’s oldest agricultural organizations. It was founded in 1881 to represent the interests of Ontario beekeepers. Beekeeping in Ontario is a diverse industry; with small-scale beekeepers who have one or a handful of hives, to beekeepers who manage commercial scale apiaries with thousands of hives.

From 2013-2023, the OBA’s membership grew by 114%. Due to the growth in membership and dramatic external factors – such as the COVID-19 Pandemic, inflation, and other world events – the OBA sought support in reflecting on their strategic direction. 

The OBA looked towards our team to lead the engagement for and development of a new Strategic Plan to guide the direction of the organization from 2023-2028.

We supported the OBA in updating their Strategic Plan by:

  • Engaging with an OBA Strategic Planning Advisory Committee

  • Developing, distributing, and analysing an online survey of more than 550 beekeepers and sector stakeholders across Ontario

  • Conducting a survey of the OBA Board

  • Facilitating interviews with stakeholders in Ontario’s beekeeping sector

  • Facilitating a workshop with OBA Board of Directors

  • Developing an updated Strategic Plan that is actionable and feasible, yet ambitious.

Ultimately, through supporting the strategic direction for the OBA for the next five years, our work will contribute to the vibrancy of Ontario’s beekeeping sector.
