Knowledge of on-farm Environmental Sustainability Practices
Agri-environmental decision support tools (DSTs) are any online tool or mobile phone app that farmers can use to inform decisions aimed at both improving productivity and positive environmental outcomes. In 2018 Wilton Consulting Group conducted a review of these tools that established an inventory of 107 agri-environmental tools available to Ontario farmers as well as core insights into components that make these tools most useful (Read more about this work, here).
Following this work, our team worked with the OFA to host a workshop in December 2019 to improve the sector’s understanding of specific tools being used by Ontario farmers and to discuss ways to improve the uptake and effectiveness of DSTs.
So What?
The workshop brought together farmers, academia, tool developers, and others to share knowledge of new and innovative tools, and discuss the prospects for creating an umbrella platform to compile and organize agri-environmental DSTs that are available to Ontario farmers. Discussion at the workshop emphasized the importance of considering the costs, structure, governance, and logistics for development of such an umbrella platform.
